Sansol to Logroño
We left Sansol in a drizzling rain and followed a steep path down to cross the Linares River. In the first town Torres del Rio we stopped to look at an octagonal church linked to the Knights Templar. The trail then continued to Viana and the tomb of Cesare Borgia. He was the illegitimate son of the pope elected in 1492 and became the commander of the Papal armies. He was also a patron for Leonardo de Vinci and Machiavelli. We then made our way to Logroño with drenching rain for the last few miles. In the evening we visited a number of churches that were open. Almost all of the churches we passed in the smaller towns were closed so this was a great opportunity for us. They were quite opulent with silver and gold alters from floor to ceiling. In one we saw a statue of the pilgrim depiction of Saint James with a dog at his side.
